Past Rotarians Club
of Bournemouth (No 1)

Meetings, outings, fixed events and Diamond Jubilee

Where and when we meet

Our headquarters
The headquarters of the Past Rotarians Club of Bournemouth is at the Belvedere Hotel, on Bath Hill, in the town centre. The hotel is also the headquarters of the Rotary Clubs of Bournemouth, Bournemouth North and Bournemouth East Cliff.

It is a pleasant coincidence that the chairman of the meeting that formed our Club 60 years ago was the distinguished Rotarian, International President Tom Warren, who in his latter years came to live at the hotel that is now the Belvedere. There is a plaque commemorating that by the hotel entrance. It was unveiled by RI President Bill Boyd when the RIBI Conference was held in Bournemouth in 2007.

Lunch Meeting
We have a monthly Club Lunch at the hotel on the last Tuesday of each month. There is no attendance requirement for our meetings. We have a wide variety of speakers such as Professor Vincent May on the Jurassic Coast, Eric Freeman on Lifeboats and their crew, Dr Trevor Fulton on researching ancestors through the web and John Umfreville on Working with the Red Guards. Our ladies join us for some of our Lunch Meetings. At other times, they like to gather together instead for lunch at the nearby Miramar Hotel. We and our ladies also enjoy together various social events, e.g., quizzes at the Belvedere Hotel.

‘Second Tuesday’ Meeting
After brief business at our meeting on the second Tuesday of each month we have a discussion or debate among members on current issues, ranging from the American Presidential Election to Good and Bad manners and even the Paranormal. For some of these meetings, instead of being at our usual venue, we will have an outing to somewhere of interest, generally with a vocational interest, e.g., the Electricity Museum in Christchurch.

Coffee mornings
Coffee mornings with our ladies are traditionally held at the Miramar Hotel in the off-season and in the summer in members’ homes. In addition, sometimes we will go to a hotel or restaurant in, say, the New Forest for an additional outing.

Some outings by our Club members have included:

Overnight visit to the Fire Service Staff College, with dinner in the Mess
• Trooping the Colour

Diamond Jubilee and Rotary links
Last year, 2007-8, the Past Rotarians Club of Bournemouth celebrated 60 years of existence, two months before our Mother Club, the Rotary Club of Bournemouth, celebrated its 90th year. A group of members attended the RIBI Conference in Bournemouth in 2007 and we were invited to the District Governor¹s Dinner there. During the year, we also published a Book of Members, with pictures, containing details of current members and as former members, since deceased, of whom we could garner details.

The Jubilee Year culminated in a banquet, including several of our friends from local Rotary Clubs and our principal guest was Keith Millman, District Governor of Rotary District 1110.

One of our Honorary Members, Maurice Patterson, MBE, who is also a member and Past President of the Rotary Club of Bournemouth, is the Association’s official Liaison Officer with RIBI. Maurice is also a Paul Harris Fellow.

A group of members attended the RIBI Conference in Bournemouth in 2007 and we were invited to the District Governor’s Dinner there.
